Memory Foam Buying Guides

Why is it best?

Memory Foam is a hugely popular material on mattresses. Also known as visco-elastic foam, its unique properties allow it to mould to the shape of your body. What this means is that all of your body is supported, resulting in each of your main pressure points beingis practically eliminated. It is the most effective material used for relieving pressure on these main points of your body, and is widely used not only in domestic bedding but in hospitals and other health aware environments.

This results in a much more comfortable nights sleep, in fact it is claimed that a memory foam mattress reduces tossing and turning during the night by 80%. One of our memory foam mattresses maybe espcially effective for you if you suffer from any rheumatic conditions, back problems, or skeletal diseases.

When is it best?

Memory Foam is probably most effective when it is at a thickness of over 2", but less than 5". This is because a layer of Memory Foam less that 2" simply wouldn't be thick enough for it to have any real effect, though you might be able to see the foam depressing and then reforming, it certainly wouldn't be enough to give you the full benefits of the material. Anything thicker than 5" would be too soft to sleep on comfortably, and again you wouldn't get the full benefits of the Memory Foam.

Which is best?

Despite Memory Foam's various and impressive benefits, as with all materials, it can have downsides. For instance, brand new Memory Foam can have a mildly chemical odour to it. However, this doesn't last and consistently decreases, nearly always to the point of eradication, by simply airing the Memory Foam. It has also previously been noted that certain types of Memory Foam, particularly higher-density varieties, can make you feel too warm as you sleep. This is because this type reacts to heat, which is what enables it to mould around you. This can be dealt with efficiently in two ways: Lower density foam - This type of Memory Foam reacts not to heat, but to weight. As such, the foam won't retain the heat as the higher density foam does, leaving the Memory Foam itself cooler, and conversely, you won't overheat; Breathable covers - These are available on plenty of our Memory Foam products. They typically feature channels for the air to flow between, cooling the body of the Memory Foam, also cooling you. There are also some which can actually absorb body heat, and release it away from where you are sleeping.

Recently, some manufacturers have started using latex as a topping material on their mattresses. This shares many of the same properties as Memory Foam, also conforming to your body and supporting you fully. Of course, both have their pros and cons but both do a fantastic job and are the most advanced materials in mattresses you will find on the market.

Different Manufacturers

Different manufacturers have different ways of dealing with and using Memory Foam. For instance, Sleepeezee use a type of Memory Foam named iFoam. This iFoam is able to conform to your body whilst not overheating, as it reacts to pressure rather than heat. Sealy, the world's leading bed manufacturer generally use a blend of Latex in Memory Foam in the majority of their mattresses. This is able to use the best points of both latex and memory foam.
